What Is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

If you’ve been researching therapy options for your child with autism, you’ve likely come across the term “ABA.”

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is one of the most well-established and research-backed therapies for autism. For decades, it has been recognized by doctors, psychologists, and behavioral health professionals as an effective approach. In the U.S., insurance providers are required to cover ABA therapy, which can be provided in various settings, including Learning Centers, homes, communities, and schools.

While many assume ABA is a single, standardized therapy, it’s actually a highly adaptable approach that incorporates different techniques to help children build essential skills for both academics and everyday life.

Our Approach to Contemporary ABA

At Trellis, we use the term contemporary ABA to highlight how our methods differ from the more structured, traditional forms of therapy.

So, what exactly does contemporary ABA involve? While it is rooted in the core principles of traditional ABA, the approach has advanced significantly since the 1970s and ’80s. Earlier ABA methods primarily emphasized reinforcing specific behaviors, whereas today’s strategies are more individualized, developmentally appropriate, and centered around the needs of both the child and their family.

Shaped by decades of clinical expertise, our contemporary ABA:

Uses data and current treatment literature to inform and guide practices and treatment

Makes learning playful, naturalistic, age-appropriate, and fun

Integrates the unique needs, interests, culture, and values of your child and family

Considers you and other caregivers a core partner in your child’s treatment

Science is constantly advancing, so it’s essential to choose a provider who keeps up with the latest research. Look for a team dedicated to high-quality care, actively participating in ABA conferences and ongoing training. With the right guidance and support, your child can flourish and lead a joyful, meaningful life.
